It penetrates the o-rings, and washes out the grease sealed between the o-rings at the factory. Wipe it down with a rag & soapy water, rinse it off with a light spray of water, and when it dries, lube it with o-ring safe chain lube.

I suggest lubeing it with a quality chain lube such as Maxima Chain guard or belray superclean chainlube and having the correct tension. If you have that your chain/sprockets will last a long time.
